To measure stairs for carpets, start by measuring the width of each step and the length of the tread and riser (over nosing). For example, 12 standard steps at 83cm wide x 45cm o/n. If you have winder (triangle) steps, measure them separately at their widest and longest points. A curved bottom step (bullnose) also needs a separate measurement, ensuring the widest part around the curve is included. Example measurements:
• Standard steps: 9x @ 83cm wide x 45cm o/n
• Winder steps: 1.00m x 50cm o/n, 70cm x 55cm o/n, 95cm x 60cm o/n
• Bullnose step: 1.20m x 45cm o/n
Stairs are usually carpeted in strips to minimise waste. If you’re covering the landing or hallway in the same carpet, creating a plan helps optimise material usage. For example, a 4m x 4m carpet could cover the hall, stairs, and landing efficiently.
